Our ESG Journey
In accordance Government Regulation on Sustainability (POJK 51) and global issue that demands the attention of our stakeholders, our approach to sustainability is guided by our sense of purpose: To create long term value and manage responsible balance business decision. We do this through our three sustainability pillars – Sustainable Banking, Sustainable Operation, and CSR & Financial Inclusion as well as aligning our framework to UN SDGs, SUSBA, MSCI, SASB, and GRI Reporting Standards.
Bank Mandiri has formulated steps and policies to respond issues related to sustainable finance implementation by focusing on 5 priority sectors, namely: Palm Oil, Infrastructure, Oil & Gas, F&B, and Mining. With this principle, business units must pay attention to Bank Mandiri’s policies to avoid projects or businesses that are clearly harmful to the environment. Additionally, as part of Bank Mandiri’s commitment to sustainable finance, in April 2021, Bank Mandiri issued Sustainable Bonds, amounting USD 300 Million with the use of proceeds for Renewable Energy, Clean transportation, Climate change adaptation, Healthcare, Education, Gender Equality, etc.
Under the Sustainable Operation Pillar, Bank Mandiri conducted sustainable banking operation through implementing Green Office Program that includes replacing LED lights, rejuvenating air conditioners and installing waste management (water recycling) in the existing Bank Mandiri office building. Electrical energy consumption during 2020 for 4 Bank Mandiri buildings (Plaza Mandiri Head Office, Sentra Mandiri Building, Menara Mandiri Building, and Wisma Mandiri Building) has decreased by 25.96% on an annual basis and recycled water usage portion has reached 25% of total water usage. The Bank’s commitment to implementing a green office is evident in Eco-Friendly Action (paperless activities, reduce electricity consumption, recycled waste and etc.), which initially focused on 4 regional offices, has spread nationally across all Bank Mandiri work units.
For our third pillar, CSR and financial inclusion, we focused on our community empowerment and continued to champion social entrepreneurship trough several programs, such as MSME empowerment through Rumah Kreatif BUMN, Government Subsidized Loan, Agent Banking Program, Mandiri Sahabatku for migrant workers to become entrepreneurs, Rice Milling Unit in Pamarican and Kebumen, and collaborating with Fintech for women empowerment.
To ensure that we understand and focus on the ESG factors that are most material to our external stakeholders and our company’s core business strategy, we showed our commitment through meaningful disclosure on our Sustainability Report. We continue to monitor, manage and improve our strategy that includes economic, environmental, social and governance performance and impact to create greater long term sustainable value.
